The „Ożarowska” Association for Children, Teenager and Adults with Disabilities has for the second time received a grant from the European Social Fund as part of the project launched by the Warsaw Family Support Center, called “Integration for Independence”.

This year’s project called “Destination Independence – The Next Step” will offer continuation of activities from last year’s program, as well as new elements, whose goal is to prepare the project’s participants for living on their own in supported monitored flats, looking for a job and fulfilling their role in society.

The project is scheduled for three very intensive months. Apart from rehabilitation camp and meetings, whose aim is to improve the participants’ motor skills, which is very important for people who cannot move on their own, the project will also include:

·         Group sessions in career counseling – In these sessions the following topics will be discussed: predisposition and professional qualifications analysis, getting to know techniques that are useful when one is looking for a job, acquiring knowledge about the services provided by institutions on the job market, learning about current trends on the job market and about the most sought-after professions. These meetings will require the participants to take an active part through discussion, brainstorming, physical and integrative exercises, as well as exercises which will allow the participants to understand certain issues and practice them.

·         Independence and Safety – This course will cover the topic on how to act, when faced with critical or potentially dangerous situations, what to do in case of emergency or in case of failure (e.g. failure of equipment), what to do when you get sick, how not to fall prey to crime, as well as how to stay safe while using the Internet, plan one’s day, plan the household budget, go shopping, pay the bills, keep a bank account. These topics will be covered both in theory and in practice.

·         Individual Independence Training will focus on the practical aspect of the project and will allow the participants to put the knowledge and skills they have acquired during the Independence and Safety course into practice. During these individual meetings the participant and his or her assistant will practice using payment card, running errands at a post office, shopping, planning budget, etc.

·         Criteria of adulthood – These workshops will be focused on building the image of one’s personal situation, forming relations based on partnership, building a feeling of autonomy and working on one’s relationship with parents. The workshops will be conducted by an experienced sex therapist, Halina Długołęcka, M.D. and psychologist Tomasz Graś, M.A. who knows these problems first-hand as he himself is in a wheelchair.

·         An intensive advanced English course which is to serve as an incentive for the participants to take the exam testing knowledge of the language.

·         Drivers Education for participants who are able to drive car by themselves.

·         Active weekends – three daylong weekend activities planned, organized and conducted by the program’s participants. These active weekends will include: a trip outside of Warsaw, collective club outing with friends and caretakers and a trip to a museum followed by a farewell lunch.

·         Personal assistants will provide all necessary help  for the participants.

We have invited participants of the previous edition of the program to take part in this year’s project.
