European Day of  Battle Against Discrimination of Disabled People

As part of the European Day of Battle Against Discrimination of  Disabled People a photographic exposition entitled “Looking with hope” was held in the Polish Parliament. The main theme of the exposition were the problems of people with cerebral palsy. The exposition was opened by the Speaker of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, Mr. Bronisław Komorowski, who also took patronage over the exposition. The idea of the exposition originated among the members the Association of Parents with Cerebral Palsy Children  which was founded nearly two years ago at the Ożarowska Centre. The Association was also organizer of the event. The exposition was possible thanks to the invitation of the Parliamentary Board for People with Disabilities and its chairman, Mr. Marek Plura MP.

“Through these photos and descriptions of the trials and tribulations of the protagonists of this exhibit, we want to draw the attentions of those establishing the Polish law, as well as society in general to the fact that something needs to be done in order to improve the situation of cerebral palsy children , as well as their families whose lives have been marked with suffering caused by disability of their loved ones” – said Ewa Jagiełło, the President of the Association.

During the event madam President of the Association presented Mr. Bronisław Komorowski with a petition whose authors postulate the introduction of specific legal solutions which would result in the improvement of the quality of life and status of people with cerebral palsy and their families. During the event Mr. Bronisław Komorowski met with children with this type of disability and their parents.

Later on a debate was held concerning problems connected with the situation of disabled people and the acts of their discrimination in Poland. Some of the debaters were representatives of organizations acting for the benefit of people with disabilities. Mr. Marek Plura, MP[1] was in charge of the debate. Minister Jarosław Duda, the Government’s Plenipotentiary for Disabled People was also present at the debate.
